The major of seed science and engineering originated from the major of agronomy, and in the 1980s, the elective course "Seed Science" was introduced in the major of agronomy, which became a necessary
supplement to the major of agronomy; in the 1990s, "Seed Science" became the core course of the major of agronomy together with "Crop Breeding" and "Crop Cultivation". In 2003 and 2004, the Department
of Seed Science and Engineering was approved as a major in the field of seed production. In 2010, in order to cope with the fierce international competition, according to the national seed industry
development strategy and to meet the development trend of modern agriculture, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University opened a bachelor's degree in seed science and engineering.
The major is mainly based on the National Key (cultivation) Discipline of Crop Genetic Breeding of our university. The discipline was awarded the first master's degree in 1981 and 1983, and the first
doctoral degree in 1984 and 1986 respectively. In the same year, Crop Genetic Breeding was named as one of the six key disciplines of the Ministry of Agriculture, and in 2007, it was named as a
national key discipline (only two in Fujian Province).
